Biography

Dr. Johnson is a born and raised Texan and lived there her whole life until moving to Georgia in August 2012. She's been fascinated by criminals since a young age by watching Unsolved Mysteries with her mom. She decided to double major in Criminal Justice and Sociology at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX and earned her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. Dr. Johnson decided she wanted to delve deeper into understanding human behavior and was accepted into the master's program in Sociology at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX and subsequently earned her Master’s degree in Sociology with a specialization in criminology. By this time, Dr. Johnson knew that earning a PhD was for her so she applied and was accepted into UNT's Sociology PhD program and specialized in family violence and criminological theory. It was during this time that Dr. Johnson discovered she had a passion for teaching and knew she wanted to become a professor.  The rest they say is history!

Today, her primary passions are for seeking justice for all domestic violence survivors and for those who have been wrongfully accused and convicted. Dr. Johnson seeks to achieve this by educating her students about the dynamics of domestic violence, including child abuse, as well as the injustices that occur within the Criminal Justice System (CJS). She hopes by educating her students that DV survivors have a voice and have services, as well as giving a voice to those wrongfully accused and convicted in the CJS. 

Perhaps something interesting about her is that she has taught for a study abroad program through Midwestern State University (2010, 2011, 2012, 2019) that takes students to London for a month in the summer! Dr. Johnson has also taught for the China study abroad program here at Dalton State (through USG's Asia Council) in May 2014 and May 2019. In May 2015, she also took Dalton State Criminal Justice students on a study abroad trip to Taiwan and Hong Kong with Valdosta State University professor, Dr. Wilson Huang (Taiwan native).  In the summer of 2016, she taught for the USG's European Council in Madrid, Spain for 5 weeks. Study abroad to Taiwan and Macau was on the schedule for May 2020, but 2020 had other plans for us, but she and Dr. Huang hope to take students there in 2022.  

Fitting right in line with her studies, Dr. Johnson's all time favorite TV show is the Showtime series Dexter. Her other main interest lies in traveling the world. So far, she has traveled to England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, the Czech Republic, France, the Dominican Republic, China (including Taiwan and Hong Kong), Costa Rica, Spain, Iceland, the Bahamas, Italy, Puerto Rico, and 33 of the U.S. states and hopes to continue adding to the list!
